Operation Stop The Virus

The Michael Asawalam Foundation, a community-based NGO, prioritizes preventive health initiatives. We carry out strategic activities aimed at health promotion in rurual communities in Imo State.
There has been ongoing efforts to combat the scourge of HIV in Nigeria. However some of the drivers of the epidermic surprisingly remain issues such as low level of awareness among communities, the disproportionately high rate of HIV transmission among the key populations(MSM, FSW, PWID, Prisoners) in the country, and poor access to healthcare facilities.
During a recent free community medical outreach, an HIV awareness discussion revealed a significant knowledge gap among participants regarding viral illnesses, particularly HIV, Hepatitis B, and C.
In response, the medical team developed a 10-point questionnaire to assess awareness levels of these diseases among rural residents. The results highlighted a severe lack of knowledge. Additionally, a notable case emerged when a 21-year-old male presented with anal warts and was subsequently diagnosed with HIV. This individual, a member of the LGBTQ community, facilitated the Foundation’s engagement with the LGBTQ population in Imo State, fostering collaboration on future HIV awareness activities.
Launched in December 2023, the “Operation Stop the Virus” project aims to curb the transmission of HIV, Hepatitis B, and C by promoting preventive measures and empowering youth to champion transmission prevention strategies.
Aim
To raise awareness and prevent HIV, Hepatitis B, and C infections.
